The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category May Address This Issue

Each time a prominent prize-giving event draws close, you'll find an outcry to include of new categories to recognize overlooked contributions and fill the passions of followers who have specialized interests.

Another commentator made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are board games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand stands as crucial and significant. Here's the proposal: There should be a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and it will always start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why movie academies steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains a necessary evil within the realm of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they hardly constitute one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications effectively encompass numerous genres, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, all very different: structural challenges in a particular game, intense tile-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers published annually without proper recognition at major award shows, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked in any category during that awards season
  • Another creative title received no nominations in 2019
  • A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often modest productions, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles count as the most-played games worldwide continuing this trend for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience challenges famous sandbox experiences claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these are games that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers function at the demanding boundary interactive creation, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
