No fewer than 13 people lose their lives and 98 hurt in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” stated the head of state.

The president announced that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose term ended the year before. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's strategic goals for the southern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The development of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a significant increase of its duties in public works. They were completed at an rapid speed, surpassing predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled ongoing questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party urged an urgent pause in the development and management of all such projects.

This halt was suggested pending a thorough technical review. The party emphasized that the situation "demands swift accountability."

In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and management of these national undertakings.
