Federal Reserve Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Year Amid Financial Instability

The US monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second reduction in the current year amid economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs created to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of positions created to the economy in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to release September’s employment data in early October, it halted its release when the closure started. Employment data company ADP reported earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said recently, which he had previously said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that prices are rising, albeit slowly. Costs rose 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
