At least 11 of the meteorological balloons, transporting 18,000 packs of contraband cigarettes, have been collected so far

Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for hours when numerous of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.

Flight Disruptions

The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations impacting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.

Law Enforcement Actions

Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the main terminal.

Up to 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend passed through the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and near the Belarusian boundary.

No fewer than 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.

Regional Smuggling Pattern

While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."

To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.

Neighboring Country Impact

At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the balloons.

Criminal Methodology

Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves especially affected by weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."

Law Enforcement Objectives

Officials added that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that these practices become not financially viable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."

International Concerns

Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.

Similar occurrences in nearby states have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
